Chinese Ambassador Zhao Yongchen attending Sod-Turning Ceremony for China-Aid Low Income Housing Project Phase Two-Beausejour Site with Prime Minister Keith Mitchell

On May 15, 2019,Sod-Turning Ceremony for China-Aid Low Income Housing Project Phase Two- Beausejour Site was held in St. Georges, Grenada. Dr the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell, Prime Minister of Grenada, Dr Zhao Yongchen, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Grenada, Hon. Delma Thomas, Minister for Social Development, Housing and Community Empowerment, attended the ceremony. Also present were nearly 100 people from all walks of life including government officials, medias, local residents, and Chinese construction team.

In his speech, Dr. the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell thanked the Government and People of the People’s Republic of China for their generous assistance and support in the fields of infrastructure, education, social welfare, agriculture, transportation and sports. The housing issue has been a priority for the Grenadian Government. The China-Aid low-Income Housing Project is not only the most important bilateral cooperation project, but also a symbol of friendship between our two countries. The commencement of the Beausejour site marks the full launch of the second phase of the project. Phase two will build houses to hundreds of Grenadian families, improve their living standard, and promote economic and social development.

Ambassador Zhao expressed warm congratulations on the launch of the Beausejour Site, pointing that under the direct care and full support of Honorable Prime Minister and the Government of Grenada, the project has progressed smoothly and achieved expected results. He believes that with the joint efforts from both sides, the project is heading for a timely completion in high quality and will play an important role in improving the living conditions of the people. He emphasized that, since the resumption of diplomatic relations between the People’s Republic of China and Grenada, the friendly bilateral relations have been deepening, and practical cooperation have taken to a new height. In 2018, the two Governments signed the Memorandum of Understanding on Joint Construction of the Belt and Road Initiative, which opened a new chapter in practical cooperation between the two countries. China and Grenada will adhere to the principle of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits, and connect effectively Belt and Road Initiative with Grenada National Sustainable Development Plan 2035, so as to further enhance the friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries.
